When Did I Become a Japanese Culture Fan-boy?
I'm not sure when it started -
I remember sometime between 7th and 9th grade discussing with my parents wanting to be an exchange student in Japan. And I don't recall when I first started liking the Japanese garden aesthetic and bonsai. I do remember watching certain shows as a kid that now would be considered classic anime (Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets (aka G-Force), Space Battleship Yamato, Voltron, Thundercats) Then - it all kind dropped from my consciousness. Until sometime in 2014-15- I started binge watching anime (thanks Adult Swim and Netfix/Hulu) Because I got frustrated with anime series only being 13 episodes and plot-lines not getting completed - I started reading the manga or light novels the shows were based on. Which lead to online streaming sites, translation project sites etc.
Now - I pretty much am reading light novels daily and watching anime daily, I read manga occasionally. I make regular trips to Mitsuwa Marketplace for edibles, sake and beer, as well as the summer festival.
Emily is interested (somewhat) - I think given the choice, she'd rather go to Belgium- but I floated the idea of going to Japan as her high school graduation gift - and she's in (since no one else seems to be interested - it would be just the 2 of us)
so if this lasts - I'll be in Kyoto spring or summer of 2021 or 2022, I'm looking forward to it!
I've started looking at tours and logistics of the trip. I am hoping we can go over spring break 2021 and see the cherry blossoms. I've found a few sites online that have activities and tours. I think I can make this happen.
***update 05/2018: Emily is hooked on anime (and the European version) Miraculous Ladybug, Sailor Moon, others. It is hilarious to see her squee and prance around and 'fan-girl'
***update 09/21/2018: the current version of 'Volton' is Emily's obsession. She reads fan-fic and whatnot in addition to watching the shows. I've introduced her to rom-coms and slice of life drama/romance as well but she doesn't seem to be interested. We sometimes 'geek out' together, it's as much fun to have another fan in the house as it is to induce Leanne's eye-rolls. I landed tickets to the My Hero Academia movie screening on the 29th. Emily would rather go to that, than go to the homecoming dance. I know these days are numbered. I'll enjoy it while I can. (Em will have a boyfriend eventually, and won't have as much time for her 'Weeb' Dad.
