Travels: December 1997, Cruise and Florida Keys

I'm going to post timelines and remembrances of trips/vacations - I'll tag all such posts with "Travels"

December 1997, Cruise and Florida Keys:
Leanne and I decided to take a cruise with two other couples (Todd&Anne, Pat&Kathy) to the Caribbean. For Todd and Anne it was their first "big" trip together, I think the Windsors considered it their honeymoon. I was planning on surprising Leanne by proposing at the Captain's Dinner (I think she suspected something was up, I had let her parents know right before we left, she knew something was up when her mom started tearing up.) In addition Pat and Kathy decided to join us for a few days after the cruise in the Florida Keys. The cruise was on the Carnival Destiny, at the time it was among the largest cruise ships in the world. The ship was only a few months old, we all had larger staterooms with balconies, king sized beds, space. My only previous cruising experience was on a much smaller, much older ship with four of us to a cabin (two sets of bunk beds!). I was impressed with this ship. The food was very good, the staff was friendly. I remember we would joke around with our wait staff at almost every meal (Jugadeesh!) We all had fun. We took turns as to who would give the toast at dinner. I colluded with Todd and Pat to make sure that I could give the toast at the captains dinner. I proposed the old fashioned way, on one knee.
Ports of call were Ocho Rios, (Jamaica), Grand Cayman (British West Indies) and Cozumel  (Mexico). In Jamaica,  Leanne and I spent our day shopping while the rest went horseback riding. The plan for Grand Cayman was to go SCUBA diving, everyone but Kathy and I got seasick on the way out - She and I had a great dive. The whole group took a ferry to Tulum before returning to Cozumel for the evening. We had time for shopping and dinner there (I bought an engagement ring)
After the cruise, Todd and Anne went home, We picked up a rental car and drove down to the Cheeca Lodge on Islamorada (about 3 hours from Miami). Leanne and Kathy reminisced about a previous trip and we hit some of the same spots; swimming with dolphins at The Theater of the Seas, watching the sunset at Mallory Square and conch chowder from Sloppy Joe's in Key West.
