Travels: 2000-2001 Mexico
We decided it was a good idea to USE the timeshare that we'd purchased while on our honeymoon. We went to Cabo San Lucas in 2000 and tried to go again in 2001, the resort in Cabo was very nice, adjacent to a world class golf course, grounds are well maintained etc. Only criticisms:
no easy way to get into town, (taxis end up being expensive) and the ocean is pretty rough at the hotel's beachfront. We did many of the typical tourist activities, parasailing, etc. SCUBA was pretty cool, a little 'sharky', but cool. I think we had the most fun taking an ATV out to the desert and riding around.
We wanted to go back the next year, we planned to go at the end of summer (to stretch summer out and to miss the hottest part of the year in Cabo- I wanted to see the desert blooming). We booked our stay, way in advance, and got a good deal on plane tickets - we were all set to go, The last week of September seemed ideal.
September 11th, plane travel got disrupted for an indeterminate period of time. For a while we didn't care about our vacation. After a little while more, we felt like we really needed that vacation. It was a very stressful time. The day to depart had arrived. Unfortunately, so had Hurricane Juliette. We crossed our fingers that the storm would miss, or that it would be over by the time we got there. The storm had slammed into Cabo San Lucas, the airport was closed (we didn't know how bad the damage was). The airline would not cancel our flight, we were scheduled to have a stopover in Dallas, we ended up spending 2 days there (once flying to LA only to be sent back as SJC was still closed). On the 3rd day we had had enough, we told a ticket agent to get us a refund and send us home, our vacation was a bust. The agent had another idea,
"How about we do a weather related re-route? It's against the rules, but what do I care? They're going to lay me off anyway."
We called the booking office to see if we could move our reservation to Cancun, and took the re-route. (Usually a re-route of this kind was only to the next closest airport, think Chicago to Milwaukee, this agent rerouted us several thousand miles, the equivalent of Chicago to Montreal!)
Being back in Cancun didn't suck. We checked out the changes that took place in the area. We swam with dolphins at a new attraction on the tourist "strip" and overall had a pretty good time with our abbreviated vacation.
